Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love. 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Our primary mission is to serve as ambassadors for Jesus Christ and for Crean Lutheran High School. Dedicated to upholding Christian values, team spirit, and servant leadership, the Spiritleaders interact with the crowd, school and community to generate Christ-like enthusiasm, encouragement, support for our Football and Basketball sports teams, and competes for God’s glory. We are dedicated to raising up strong, empowered leaders with the heart of Christ, in order to develop a community of passionate and mature disciples who will transform the world by love, leadership, and service.

Crean Lutheran is excited for its Cheerleading and Songleading Program for 2019-2020. Our spirit program will continue to bring school spirit to our sporting events, pep rallies and other school events, entertaining and exciting the audiences.  Please download the Spirit Handbook if you are interested in trying out.

Crean Lutheran spirit program teams ready to entertain fans and support teams

Be on your guard; stand firm in your faith; be courageous; be strong. 1 Corinthians 16:13

Members of the Crean Lutheran spirit program will be out at athletic events throughout the year entertaining fans and providing support for the teams. “Our goal is to not only entertain our audience, but get more crowd participation to encourage our players on the field,” said Brandi Walshe, the head coach.

The spirit program consists of both sideline cheer and song. The groups perform at football games, basketball games, pep rallies and school events and combine athleticism and artistry to help bring school spirit at the games, according to Walshe. The sideline cheer unit consists of of JV and varsity. “They bring spirit by leading chants and crowd encouragements,” Walshe said. “Chants are what we yell to heighten the school spirit.” The units also use “crowd encouragements” calling out to the crowd to get a response, she added. Some of the students will have other duties too. “A great portion of the sideline cheer team is also on the stunt team on campus, so these cheerleaders will also stunt and do tumbling passes throughout the games,” Walshe said. “However, it is not a requirement to stunt or tumble to be a part of sideline cheer.”

Crean Lutheran also has a song unit, which is also comprised of both JV and varsity. “Song is a fusion of dance and cheer and will usually be seen dancing with poms in-hand,” Walshe said. “One of the most iconic and traditional pom squads are the USC Song Girls. They are also chanting alongside cheer, but they do not stunt or tumble. During timeouts or breaks, they are seen doing dance routines in the styles of jazz, pom and hip hop. Song also has a competition team that competes at multiple regional competitions and at USA Nationals in Anaheim. Last year we placed fourth out of 18 in the varsity song/pom division.”

Both teams practiced hard over the summer, according to the coach. “During the school year, both sideline cheer and song practice during zero period at 6:30 a.m. to make sure they are prepared for the following game,” Walshe said. “All of our spiritleaders have to memorize over 30 chants as well as some new dance material that sideline cheer and song will be performing together. We also work with our pep band and utilize the live music to pump up our crowd.”

All the participants follow the team’s Bible verse, Walshe said.”This verse reflects the importance of finding opportunities to love one another, build each other up, and to be courageous no matter the trials,” Walshe said. “We must put our trust fully in God to give us the strength we need to overcome any circumstance that contradicts or could potentially weaken our stance in faith. When we seek His counsel, we become a more unified and powerful force.”

Blessings, Saints!
My name is Brandi Walshe and I am grateful to be serving here at Crean Lutheran High School. I have assisted the Song Team for two seasons, and I am entering my third season as head coach.
I grew up training at the Ballet Conservatory in Aliso Viejo, and later grew an interest in competitive dance. I was a member of my high school and college dance teams, as well as an outside all-star team.  I danced as a Los Angeles Laker Girl for two seasons, and as a Los Angeles Rams Cheerleader for one season. I am entering my eighth year as a performer at the Disneyland Resort, and I am continuing to work on dance jobs through The Movement Talent Agency in North Hollywood.
By using my gifts, my goal is to encourage my students to praise God through dance and expression, and to be a source of light for their brothers and sisters in Christ.
