Freshman Year | "Who Am I?"

Ninth grade is a foundational year for high school students. Building strong organizational and time management skills, getting involved at school, and developing a four-year plan are key aspects for a successful freshman year. Building on the question, “Who am I?,” our counseling department encourages students to lean into their relationships with Christ, and grow in their understanding of their identity in Him. This is the most important foundation to build upon over the span of four years.

• Freshman Four-Year Planning Conferences - Ninth-grade students will meet with their counselor to discuss graduation requirements and college-eligibility requirements, which will help them craft the outline of their four-year plan.

• Freshmen Presentation (September) - Ninth-grade students will hear from their counselors and a panel of upperclassmen sharing tips on time management, getting involved, and navigating high school.  

• Freshmen Conferences (September-November) - Freshmen will build upon their four-year plans, and check-in with their school counselor about their start to high school during their freshman conference. These conferences are by appointment, and allow school counselors to get to know students’ hobbies, interests, school involvement, academic and spiritual goals, current classes, and initial post-graduation ideas.

• Testing Day (October) - Freshmen take the PSAT 8/9 which will help familiarize them with standardized tests, and prepare them for future tests (e.g. SAT, ACT). The PSAT 8/9 does not require students to study or practice beforehand - it is a snapshot of their current skills and abilities, and serves as a baseline standardized testing score. Score reports typically are released by the College Board at the end of the Fall Semester.

• Presidential Service Award - Freshmen are encouraged to pursue volunteer service hours in areas they are passionate about throughout their high school years. Ninth grade is an ideal time to begin, as it helps students discover their God-given gifts and abilities while working toward the Presidential Service Award. To start logging service hours and work toward this award, please contact our Director of Student Pathways, Stacy Kemp, for access to our hour-tracking system, Track It Forward, and for additional information.

• Congressional Service Award - Ninth-grade students interested in setting long-term goals in public service, physical fitness, and personal development are encouraged to explore and begin working toward the Congressional Award. Students who wish to include the Gold Medal on their college applications and resumes are encouraged to register for the program online by February of their freshman year. Sophomore Year | "Where am I Going?"

Tenth grade is an exciting time for high school students. This year provides a wonderful opportunity for students to build on the content and skills they learned as freshmen and explore God’s guidance of the question “Where am I going?” Students will learn about college systems and career options for post-high school planning. Our counseling department encourages students to trust and rely on God’s sovereignty while exploring more about who God made them to be as individuals.

• Testing Day (October) - Students take the PSAT, which will help further familiarize them with standardized tests and prepare for future tests (e.g. SAT, ACT). 

• College & Career Planning Presentation for Sophomores (February) - Take the next step in completing your four-year plan as you learn about various college systems, career paths, and industry trends. Students will utilize Naviance to complete Strengths Assessments.

• Sophomore Check-In ( February-March) - Sophomores meet one-on-one with their counselor to discuss first-semester grades, course selection for the upcoming academic year, and check-in about school involvement and personal goals. Students also make progress on their four-year plans during the check-in meeting.

• California Scholarship Federation Application - Students who are interested in achieving the Life Membership Award, will need to continue to submit the California Scholarship Federation application each semester after taking a CSF-eligible course.  Please reach out to the California Scholarship Federation Coordinator.

• Honor Society Applications (Due January 30th) - Students who are interested in seeking acceptance into one or more Honor Societies must be Sophomores or Juniors with a minimum cumulative weighted academic GPA of 3.80 or higher. Additionally, students who apply must reflect the four central tenets of each Honor Society through documented evidence of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Admission into each Honor Society is stringent and it is never too early to begin preparations for admission to the National Honor Society

Junior Year | "How am I Going to Get There?"

Eleventh grade proves to be a year in which many growth opportunities are presented to students. Students fine-tune their extracurricular activities, start building their list of potential colleges or other post-high school opportunities, begin part-time employment, and some even get their driver's license! Although all of the new and exciting opportunities multiply frequently, our counseling department focuses on ensuring juniors possess healthy coping skills and build on the question, “How am I going to get there?”, understanding that we are living according to His will and what God has already proclaimed truth and purpose over our lives!

• California Scholarship Federation Application - Students who are interested in achieving the Life Membership Award, will need to continue to submit the California Scholarship Federation application each semester after taking a CSF-eligible course.  Please reach out to the California Scholarship Federation Coordinator.

• Testing Day (October) - You will take the PSAT/NMSQT, which will help further familiarize you with standardized tests and prepare you for future tests (e.g. SAT, ACT).

• College & Career Planning Presentation for Juniors (January) - Eleventh grade students will hear a presentation covering graduation requirements and college-eligibility requirements, which will help them craft the outline of their graduation plan. This presentation will also cover developing healthy coping skills, while navigating their college/postsecondary plans.

• Junior Conferences (January-February) - Individual conferences with your counselor. Utilizing Naviance’s College Supermatch, we will discuss the college application process, deadlines, how to build a list of reach schools, sure schools and safety schools. We will review your academic progress, your involvement in extracurricular activities, a tentative course load for your senior year, the resume you have been developing which you will be pulling from for the college application process, and more.

• Brag Sheet (June) - Juniors submit their Brag Sheet to their Counselor by June 1st so that their letters of recommendation can be written in a timely manner over the summer months.

Senior Year | "I’ve arrived!"

Twelfth grade is an exciting year for students as they prepare to cross the finish line of high school. Refining strong interpersonal skills such as communication, self-advocacy, empathy, resilience and grit.  Seniors will reflect on their time over the past four years of high school while also rejoicing in the fact that they have ‘arrived!’ Our counseling department encourages students to lean into their relationships with Christ, fully trusting in God’s purpose and timing in their lives as they enter into the mission field.

• College Application Boot Camp (First Week in August) - A one-week boot camp where counselors will work with Seniors on completing all the components of the Naviance, Common Application, the UC application, the application, essay, and supplements for each college. Crean Lutheran High School secures essay coaches to work in small group and individual settings which provide direct instruction for each senior's college essay(s).

• Senior Conferences (September-November) - Individual conferences with your counselor.  We will discuss the college application process, where the student is at in the process, deadlines, the colleges on your reach list, sure list and safety list. We will review your academic progress, your specific deadlines, procuring letters of recommendation, Naviance and much more.

• College & Career Planning Presentation for Seniors - Twelfth grade students will hear a presentation covering the finite details of the college application process. The UC application, CSU application, The Common Application, letters of recommendation, test scores, dual credit, and FAFSA.

• College Application deadlines (November) - (If applicable) Early Action, non-binding, or Early Decision, binding, November 1 or November 15 depending on college. November 30 UC and CSU applications

• College Decision Day (May) - Students are encouraged to report all college acceptances and financial aid/scholarships received in their Naviance account and to their counselor by May 1.

• California Scholarship Federation Application - If you are interested in achieving the Life Membership Award, you will need to submit the California Scholarship Federation Application after the first semester of Senior year.  If the eligible course falls during the Spring semester, you will need to fill out the application to request a final grade check for that course.  Please reach out to the California Scholarship Federation Coordinator, Stacy Kemp, at stacy.kemp@creanlutheran.org for more information.

CONCURRENT INSTRUCTION

Concurrent Enrollment is a course taken outside of Crean Lutheran High School at a secondary school institution recognized by the US Department of Education, such as the Western Association of  Schools and Colleges (WASC).  Requests require prior approval by the Crean Lutheran administration or designee through the "Academic Institution Course Request" form. Requests are subject to approval. Honors weight (eg. 5 point scale) will not be awarded.

COLLEGE CREDIT

Dual Enrollment is a course taken at a college or university. Requests require prior approval by Crean Lutheran High School administration or designee through the K-12 Approval Form provided by the college or university. Students are responsible for obtaining the K-12 form and submitting it for approval. Dual Enrollment courses will only be recorded on a student’s official transcript if the course meets a minimum graduation or minimum a-g college entrance requirement. Requests are subject to approval. Honors weight (eg. 5 point scale) will not be awarded. Dual Enrollment courses will not be considered for high school graduation requirements unless extenuating circumstances require consideration.

DUAL CREDIT

Crean Lutheran has partnered with local and national colleges and universities to provide students with increased rigor and further opportunities for academic growth. Crean Lutheran High School professors teach courses which are reviewed by colleges for rigor and scope. Students in these courses have the option to pay for college credits through those universities we partner with and earn both Crean Lutheran High School and college credit. Students who choose to purchase the college credit are still required to take the AP Exam for the respective course in May each year.

Students enrolled in a dual credit program offered through a partnering university shall be awarded honors weight for those courses, regardless of course title. A notation will be made on the student’s transcript, signifying additional projects, activities, and/or assessments.

Official Transcripts for College Applications

All Senior transcripts will be processed through Naviance. All of your active applications must have been added to your "Colleges I am Applying to" list. The Graduate Records Fee of $20 includes unlimited transcript processing of senior transcripts through Naviance. Please bring your check (payable to CLHS) to the front desk with "Grad Records Fee - [Senior Name]" in the memo section. Please contact your counselor if you need any help.
