Blue Ribbon School Announcement

September 19, 2023 – IRVINE, California – Crean Lutheran High School was one of just 353 schools across America, and the only private school in California, recognized today by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2023. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student groups on assessments. Crean Lutheran High School was recognized in the category of Exemplary High Performing Schools.

“Crean Lutheran High School’s mission is ‘Proclaiming Jesus Christ through Excellence in Education,’ and to receive such an honor affirms our commitment to this mission, to our students, and to excellence worthy of Jesus Christ,” Crean Lutheran Principal, Dr. Daniel Moyer said. “CLHS’s students, faculty, and staff are committed to value faithfulness, excellence, stewardship, service, and community. Embracing these areas we value has guided the Saints family in working unto the Lord.”

Crean Lutheran High School was founded in 2007 and hosted less than 100 students in its inaugural year. CLHS now serves the needs of approximately 1100 students and is located at the corner of Portola and Sand Canyon on an 18-acre main campus and a 12-acre athletic complex.

“The honorees for our 2023 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award have set a national example for what it means to Raise the Bar in education,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “The leaders, educators, and staff at our National Blue Ribbon Schools continually inspire me with their dedication to fostering academic excellence and building positive school cultures that support students of all backgrounds to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.”

Up to 420 schools may be nominated each year. The Department invites nominations for the National Blue Ribbon Schools award from the top education official in all states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and the Bureau of Indian Education. Private schools are nominated by the Council for American Private Education.

Three Crean Lutheran High School students were also recently named National Merit Semifinalists, seven students received National Hispanic Recognition Awards, and one received the National Indigenous Award.
